Chapter Thirty-Six
Sam asked, âHas a search party been sent through to locate them?â
âOf course.â She gestured behind her, and Sam thought this was the search party, that things were well in hand. At least, he thought that until she deflated. âBut that partyâs gone missing too. So too did the next one we sent.â
âWhat? Youâre kidding me.â Sam looked toward the entrance to the canyon he knew so well. It suddenly seemed foreboding. He shook his head, hitched his pack higher, and took a deep breath. âSo, send another team. Make certain they know the canyon well.â He looked her straight in the eye. âItâs not like thereâs many places there to get lost. The whole area is restricted by giant walls of sandstone!â
She didnât back down. âWe already did send another team. That knew the canyon well.â
âAnd? What did they find?â
She must have sensed something in his posture too that indicated he was an ally, not an adversary. She spread her hands. âNothing.â
Tom crossed his arms and loomed. âWhat do you mean, nothing?â
âIâm not being coy, sir â thatâs just it. They didnât find anyone.â
Sam looked at Tom. âNo one? What are you telling me?â
The paramedic sighed. âThat we have a total of six people lost in Claustral Canyon, and despite multiple trips through, no one can locate any of them.â Her face softened. âNot even bodies.â
Sam and Tom looked at each other, then to the gray sky. Tom shrugged. âI know that look. You tell her.â
She frowned. âTell me what?â
Sam turned to the paramedic. âI know this canyon well. Iâve done the trip dozens of times over the years in high and low water. Let us go in. If theyâre still down there, weâll find them.â
âSo we can come in after you, too?â The paramedic asked. âNo way.â
Sam tried to be charming. âMaâamâ¦â
She was not charmed. She held out her hand as if she wanted to slap the sky. âYou see this rain coming down, sir?â
âThis drizzle,â Tom put in helpfully.
âThis drizzle that looks like itâs going to pour buckets any minute now. You look like a smart man, so itâs a tossup in my experience whether you looked at the weather report this morning â smart men sometimes do, sometimes donât. So let me fill you in. According to the meteorologists, thereâs a major storm coming through. Put an end to this heat wave, which will be a blessing, but that ground is bone dry. Thereâs no place for that water to go. And if you know Claustral like you say you do, you know it floods like the old testament under heavy rain.â
Sam grinned. âThen, weâll just have to make sure to be quick.â
